A work of most excellent regard

NaNoWriMo

By Susan Andrus

November is National Novel Writing Month as presented by The Office of Letters and Light, a nonprofit group that sponsors and facilitates several programs that encourage creative writing. The idea is to write 50,000 words, approximately 175 pages, in the thirty days that November hath. That’s a mere 1,667 words a day! Totally doable!

I know, you don’t have time! Neither do I, but it was recently pointed out to me that the people who don’t have enough time are often the most successful because they budget rather than always thinking they can catch up later. I’m not sure why, but that sounded like a dare to me. I don’t have enough time, but now I’ve publicly stated that I’m going to try and unless I want to embarrass myself I’ve got to get writing.

Your novel doesn’t have to be perfect, publishable or even good, but once you’ve finished the month you should have a couple of characters you’ve gotten to know pretty well and a bit of a story.  And that’s a good start.

The program is web-based, though many areas have groups that hold “write-ins” and offer one another support. Just check your region for cohorts when you register.

So, put on your writing boots, register at nanowrimo.org and get started because there’s only thirty days in November!

p.s. Leave a comment on this post with your NaNoWriMo name so we can all be writing buddies… I’m suZqZ.
